To say that there was tension in the air would be an understatement. It felt more like a Western showdown where both sides came ready to draw after a count to ten. The body language said it all. Crossed arms. Short greetings.

I breathed deep and prayed that God’s peace would be powerfully present.

raging seaThe next two hours were like watching a storm gain momentum on the sea. Raging waves and raging tempers–I don’t like either one.

I can relate to the story of Jesus’ disciples in the boat who were afraid of the furious waves. We didn’t have waves breaking over the bow, but insults and accusations were flying freely. I hoped Jesus wasn’t sleeping on a cushion this time. We needed the Prince of Peace to rule.

Emotions were high, there was a chasm of cultural differences, two languages were spoken and opposing expectations all made for a complicated confrontation. Amazingly, little by little, the tension eased and we shared embraces. The discussion became as calm as the sea did when Jesus commanded, “Peace, Be still.” It was a miracle on the sea, and it was a miracle in the room. It was a miracle in the lives of everyone participating because the stakes were high.

Thankfully, I am navigating life in the same boat as the Prince of Peace.

Who is in the boat with you? Have you seen the Prince of Peace calm stormy waters in your life?
